Duties

Treasurer Duties
  • Township legislator required to participate and vote on all issues. 
  • Collects tax certificates (L-4029) and special assessments of taxing entities for tax bill preparation. 
  • Prepares and mails summer and winter tax bills for real and personal property tax. 
  • Maintains and processes mailing list of deferments of summer property taxes. 
  • Collects real and personal property tax.
  • Distributes tax collections to the county treasurer and other taxing entities twice a month.    
  • Collects delinquent personal property tax.
  • Responsible for jeopardy assessments in collecting delinquent personal property tax.
  • Keeps an account of Township receipts (revenues) and expenditures. 
  • Verifies clerks warrants and distributes Township checks (all checks require a signature from the clerk’s office and the treasurer’s office).
  • Deposits Township revenues in approved depositories.
  • Invests Township funds in approved investment vehicles.
  • Reconciles all financial accounts on a monthly basis.  
  • Prepares monthly financial report for the township board.
  • Must appoint a deputy.
  • Must post a surety bond.
  • Works with the township assessor to ensure property tax bills are accurate

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

  • Prepares summer and winter newsletters.
  • Attends educational classes to maintain Michigan Certified Professional Treasurer status.
  • Liaison for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing permit applications and permit fees for Municipal Inspection Services.
  • Maintains website.
  • Prepares and assists with required annual financial township audit.

Tax Collection Dates

Summer Taxes (July 1 - September 15, 2025)

Summer Office Hours: Monday – Thursday, 8:00AM – 1:00PM

  • September 15, 2025 – Last day to pay without interest – Open 8 am – 5 pm
  • September 16, 2025 – 1% interest starts.

Winter Taxes (December 1, 2024 - February 17, 2026)

Winter Office Hours: Monday – Thursday, 8:00AM – 1:00PM

  • February 17, 2026 – Due Date – Open 8:00AM-5:00PM
  • March 2, 2026 – Last day to pay at Township – Open 8:00AM-5:00PM
  • Extended Hours:  September 15, 2025, December 30, 2025, February 17, 2026, March 2, 2024: 8:00AM-5:00PM
  • March 3, 2026 – Delinquent taxes are turned over to Eaton County for collection. 

Tax Collection Dates

As a taxpayer, you have the responsibility to verify that payment is being made on the correct property description.  The tax amounts listed on the tax notice are levied on the property described at the top of the tax bill and are for the indicated tax year.

Please note that failure to receive a tax bill or failure to deliver timely tax payment does not waiver interest or penalty charges.

Secured Lien

Personal Property Taxes are a Secured Lien under Michigan law (p.a. 206 of 1893, as amended; mcl 211.40) and are superior to other liens, including those recorded with the Michigan Secretary of State under the Uniform Commercial Code. Tax liens do not have to be recorded with the Michigan Secretary of State.

On and after March 1st each year, delinquent real property taxes are paid (with interest and penalties) to:

Payments

Receipts: Please send a self-addressed stamped envelope with payment for receipt.
Postmarks:  Postmarks are not accepted as payment date.  Please allow ample time for delivery if paying by mail to avoid late arrival.
Drop Box:  For your convenience, we have a secure drop box to the right of the front door if you choose to leave your payment after office hours.   Please do not leave cash in the drop box.
Acceptable Forms of Payment:  Checks, money orders, cash.  Checks are accepted as conditional payment only (until check has cleared).  If paying by check, please include your phone number and make checks or money orders payable to Oneida Charter Township.  Checks are accepted as conditional payment until the check clears the bank. If paying with cash, please pay exact amount.
